Page updated 05/12/08.

The APS GOLD STAR DOG designation, based on behavior evaluation and the observations of staff and volunteers at the shelter, indicates a dog with an all-around great temperament which should be a good match for most kinds of home. If you're new to dog ownership or have small children, it's worth checking out our Gold Star Dogs first.
Some dogs may behave differently in their new homes. If you need help with your adopted dog or puppy, or have any concerns, please ask to speak to one of our dog trainers. We highly recommend that all new dogs and puppies attend a basic obedience class.

NEW!! The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior has put out a position statement on puppy socialization which emphasizes the importance of early attendance at puppy classes:
http://www.avsabonline.org/avsabonline/images/stories/Position_Statements/puppy%20socialization.pdf

** We offer new adopters 3 classes with one of our dog trainers for $30. For more information, speak with our adoption staff, or e-mail doginfo@apsofdurham.org **

CHAD is a young adult Pit mix who has blossomed at the shelter into a playful, social young dog! He does well with other dogs.
Chad needs an active home where he'll get good exercise and go to obedience class :-)
More about Chad:
I had such a pleasant surprise when I took Chad out for a walk today. He is so cute and funny. It is clear that he has never had any training (the leash is quite foreign to him) but he tried so hard. He loves treats, and he takes them very gently. Chad is so eager to please. He has gotten "sit" down pat, and it would be so much fun to train him further.
Chad is very muscular, yet he did not pull on the leash. His sleek coat is a "milk chocolate," and his eyes are just one shade lighter. When we sat on the bench out on the trail, he just wanted lots of hugs and kisses.
He made an attempt at an agility challenge - he tried walking on a wet log. I laughed out loud as he slipped and slid off :-)
Chad will really blossom (and maybe become more agile) in a forever home. He is very intelligent, and he will make a wonderful best friend for his human.

Chad lives in Kennel 12.

Volunteers' Pick of the Week 4/12/08

CURTIS is an affectionate, smaller-size Pit mix who's around a year old. He's very worried about coming in and out of his kennel, but once he gets out to play, he's perky and energetic. Though he's still a little shy and sensitive, he loves gentle petting and attention. He's excellent with other dogs.
Curtis is a very endearing little guy who will blossom in a gentle, patient home that will help him build his confidence.

Curtis lives in Kennel 31.

MINDY is a lovely brindle girl who's about a year old. She has lots of energy and is very social, but she's also has some submissive behaviors that suggest she's had some inconsistent (and probably rough) handling in the past. However, she really loves people, and is very eager to please. Since she's also very attentive and interested in food treats, she should be a great dog to take to obedience class. She's excellent with other dogs.
Mindy will be a fun companion for an active family with older children, or for a single person or couple.

Mindy lives in Kennel 36.

For more information contact doginfo@apsofdurham.org.

Volunteers' Pick of the Week 4/26/08

EDGAR is a handsome Lab/Chow mix who's 1 - 1 1/2 years old. He can be a little standoffish with new people at first, but he's always pleasant, cooperative and handleable. He seems to do fine with other dogs.
Edgar would be a low-maintenance companion for a working person or couple.
More about Edgar from one of our volunteers:
Edgar is a young dog but is no silly puppy. He's a calm, steady as a rock sort of dog. He's gentle and affectionate but jumping in laps is beneath his dignity, as is chasing funny toys :-)
He enjoys walks, one on one time, and being groomed.
Edgar is my "Easter egg"dog - he has a pink nose, purple tongue, and a beautiful yellow face! He's very well-housetrained, and likes to keep a neat, clean kennel.
Edgar would be a perfect, low-key hiking and walking companion for a lucky adopter.

Edgar lives in Kennel 23.

Volunteers' Pick of the Week 5/10/08

RODNEY is a friendly Pit (?Bulldog) mix who's about 4 years old. He's a gentle, submissive boy whose tail is always wagging, and who always tries to please. He also has quite a playful side - he LOVES to play with his toys, and is excellent with other dogs.
Rodney would be a great companion for an energetic single person or couple.
Here's more about Rodney from a volunteer who knows and loves him :-)
Rodney is the boy who would be voted "Best All Around" in his high school yearbook. He's not quite as energetic as some of his younger friends, but he is always eager to get out and go for a walk. He takes care of business quickly and gets on with the fun. This guy loves to burrow in the grass outside the shelter - he rolls over on his back and wiggles for a while, then looks up at his human as if to say, "Well, I'm ready for my belly rub. What's the hold up?"
Rodney really enjoys his time in the exercise pen. He's a big love bug, so he takes time out from running and ball-chasing to snuggle up to his person. He knows "sit" and waits patiently for his treats. He has a very soft mouth and an engaging twinkle in his eye.
He would make such a sweet companion for an active person or family who would train him and give him the love he deserves.

Rodney lives in Kennel 10.

CHARLENE is a 5 month old Lab mix puppy who's lots of fun! She LOVES to chase a ball (she especially likes to "pounce" on it!), and enjoys playing with her toys. She's very attentive and highly motivated, so she'll be a wonderful young dog to train.

Charlene lives in Kennel 28.

Bruce needs a kind home that will help him blossom - obedience training classes would be a great way to help him build his confidence.

Bruce lives in Kennel 2.

JOSIE is a pretty, 2 year old Beagle who's sweet, affectionate girl who loves to be with people. She's very food-motivated, so she'll be a great dog to train. Since she seems to be a little worried around other dogs, she would probably be best placed as an only dog.
Josie will be a loyal companion for a lucky family  :-)

Josie lives in Kennel 7.

BERNIE is a Lab/Shepherd mix who's about one year old. When he first arrived at the shelter, it was obvious he hadn't had much kindness or attention in the past - he was very thin, his coat was dirty and molting, and he had a large scar on his neck and chest, probably from an embedded chain.
Despite everything, Bernie is a sweet and endearing boy, who always tries his best to please. He needs kind handling, ongoing training and socialization in a low-key, patient home.

Bernie lives in Kennel 23.

For more information contact doginfo@apsofdurham.org.

Benson lives in Kennel 20.

For more information contact doginfo@apsofdurham.org.

BARRETT is a 2-3 year old Lab mix who's very enthusiastic about everything - toys, balls, food treats, you name it!! Since he has so many interests and is so food-motivated, he should be fun and easy to train.
Barrett needs a Lab-loving, adult home where he'll get good exercise, guidance, and ongoing training.

Barrett lives in Kennel 21.

HUNTER is a handsome Red Tick Coonhound who's about 18 months old. He's an affectionate, very people-oriented boy who loves to rest his big head in your lap! He can be a little uncertain in new situations, but warms up quickly. He seems to like other dogs, and would be best placed with a playful, low-key female.
Hunter needs a committed home where he'll have a good routine, and good exercise.

Hunter lives in Kennel 29.

MELBA is a very endearing, 4 year old Lab mix who's social, gentle and affectionate. She already knows "sit" and seems to be housetrained. She likes most other dogs, and can be quite playful and flirty with lower-energy male dogs!

Melba lives in Kennel 6.

NANETTE is a beautiful white German Shepherd mix who's 3-4 years old. She was very worried (and very thin) when she first arrived at the shelter, but has come out of her shell nicely, and now enjoys going for walks with volunteers, and just hanging out with people.
Nanette needs a low-stress, adult home where she'll have some TLC at last.

Nanette lives in Kennel 14.

GABRIEL (GABE) is a cute 8 year old Poodle who's very social and sweet - he loves to be picked up and held. When he sees the people he knows and loves, he gets very excited and dances in circles on his hind legs :-)
He's great on leash, likes to go for walks, and enjoys being with other dogs (he even does well with cats!).
Gabe would be a great little companion for a retired single person or couple - he loves company and would enjoy having his people around a lot.
Gabe was lucky enough to have a sleepover with one of our volunteers - here's what she has to say:
Gabe is one of the most polite house-guests I've ever had. He slept over Friday night and again Sunday night.
He is quite the little gentleman. He made himself right at home, even though my dog was not the most gracious hostess - she doesn't like to share her human, but they worked it out very nicely.
Little Gabe is lighter than a feather. I stepped on the scale without him. When I picked him up, the digital reading did not even change. However, he has a big personality. He follows me around the house, and if I get out of sight, he looks for me, and he does a happy dance when he sees me again. He has bright, clear eyes that look like black marbles. He knows "sit," and he knows how to turn on the charm for a treat. I don't have any way of knowing if he has always been a happy boy, but I know that his little tail is always wagging, and he appears to have a big smile on his face.
This is a very special little boy. He is definitely a love bug and loves to snuggle.
Gabe needs a kind, loving home with humans who will take good care of him. He is house-trained, but he needs to be sure he can depend on a regular routine. He loves to go for walks, and takes care of business right away.
What a true little friend Gabe will be for his very special person :-)

Sidney will blossom in a kind home.

He may not have been around other dogs very much in the past, and can be a little uncertain how to act, but he gains confidence quickly with gentle, playful dogs, and becomes quite playful himself :-)
Rupert will be a great dog for a kind, patient person or couple who'll give him a good routine and consistency.

Rupert lives in Kennel 34.

NELSON is an 8 month old Australian Shepherd (/Sharpei?) mix who''s a little worried at the shelter, but he tries hard to be social. He may not have had much kind handling or attention in the past but despite that, he's very people-oriented and eager to please. He's very responsive to training (he loves food treats!), and would love to go to obedience class, which would also help his confidence. He seems to like other dogs.
Nelson needs a kind home of his own where he can be a little bit spoiled at last :-)

FOSTER CARE

ELVIS is a perky Terrier mix who's 1 1/2 years old, and about 25lbs. He's smart, outgoing, energetic and lots of fun! He's already neutered, housetrained, crate-trained and knows basic obedience commands including "sit", "down", "stay" and "spin". Though he has lots of "zip", he can settle down nicely and play quietly with his toys when nothing else is going on.
Elvis needs an adult-only home with an experienced person or couple who would enjoy a bright little dog to relax and play with :-)
Elvis is doing well in foster care - here's what his foster mom has to say about him:
Elvis is a sweet boy with a huge heart. He gets along well with every dog I have introduced him to, and he likes his humans even more. He has the basics of training including sit, down, and come. He loves toys and is learning the concept of “give” – not easy for a terrier-type personality!
He loves to go for walks in the neighborhood. Two nice walks every day is plenty to help him relax and enjoy his day inside. He loves soft snuggly spots and has settled in to all the couches in my house.
Elvis needs a person who is dog-knowledgeable and is ready to commit to a dog for life. Because of his terrier personality, his human must understand the importance of providing calm leadership and structure.
For someone who wants a companion to go for walks, play fetch and tug, and snuggle on the couch, Elvis could be the perfect dog.

Elvis lives in Foster care.

COFFEE, a perky little Poodle who's just over a year old, came to the shelter after breaking his femur (thigh bone). X-rays showed that it was a serious fracture that would need to be internally fixed with a plate and pins. He has successfully undergone surgery, and is making a great recovery :-)
Coffee is a playful, fun little dog who has been unfailingly cheerful throughout his ordeal. He has recently gone into foster care so he can continue his recovery which involves mostly crate rest (he will need repeat X-rays in a few weeks).
He is currently available to a home that would be willing to give him the time and attention he needs as he continues his convalescence.

MELISSA is an affectionate, smaller-size Lab/Boxer mix who's about 18 mos old. She's cute, perky, playful and loves everyone! She LOVES to play with her toys, and is excellent with other dogs. Since she's very focused for food treats, she'll be a fun little dog to take to obedience class.
Melissa will be a wonderful family pet :-)
Melissa has recently gone into foster care - here's what her foster mom has to say:
Melissa is a wonderful girl. I can't imagine why someone would want to give up such a sweet-natured, obedient dog.
She is polite and has only a few "bad" habits, such as snoozing on the sofa or bed when I'm not paying attention :-)
She and my cat Rufus have had a hands-off policy to date. (Melissa seems to be afraid of him). But this morning they touched noses and Melissa's tail wagged, so they may become friends soon.
At night Melissa sleeps on a blanket in my bedroom. She has been quiet and seems to like her spot.
She is housebroken. After only two days, she is walking on the leash beautifully -- no pulling. She sits and comes on command. Next we'll work on "stay."
Some of my family came for dinner yesterday, and they all loved her. She didn't even beg at the dinner table!!
I love Melissa and am delighted to have such a wonderful foster dog!

Melissa lives in Foster care.

PENELOPE is a beautiful young Dalmatian/Pit mix with unusual look, and a wonderful personality! She's cuddly, affectionate, and gentle (she loves to get in your lap!), and also has a very playful side when she gets the chance - she loves to chase a ball (she'll even bring it back!), and really likes her toys. She's excellent with other dogs.
Because she's a little sensitive, she would be best in a home without very small children, but she'll be a wonderful companion for a family with older kids.

ADOPTION PENDING

BERTIE is a sweet young Lab/Basset mix, a little under a year old, who came to us from a situation of great cruelty and neglect. Not surprisingly, he can still be a little worried in new situations and with new people, but he has come a LONG way since he first arrived! Though he's still a little sensitive, he's VERY social, and loves to cuddle, and his confidence around other dogs has greatly improved: he has gone from being quite fearful to giving them nice playbows :-)
Bertie needs a low-key, low-stress home where he'll have a good routine, and learn some basic obedience, which will be a wonderful confidence-booster.
Bertie had a fun day out at the home of one of our volunteers - here's her report:
Bertie met me right off with a smile and a kiss. That set the tone for our day together -- lots of love.
When we got home, he had a great time romping and running around the yard. His body is very Basset Hound-like, solid and a bit stocky, so it was very fun
to see him move and play with such animation. I loved his size and build -- solid enough to be really huggable, but small enough that I could lift him into
the car. With that build, he had more finesse than I expected -- he managed to jump into my aluminum lawn chair without tipping over!
Training him should be fun since he wants to please and finds love and touch so rewarding. He liked chicken, too, but he responded more enthusiastically
to touch.
He already does a nice "sit" and is good on leash. His favorite game was for me to clap to call him so he could come running full tilt for a snuggle.
Bertie took many new things in stride. I opened my outdoor office, and he followed me in. When I set up the agility tunnel, he responded with curiosity,
walking right into it to investigate. He was also very cooperative when he understood I wanted him to do something. He stood still while I fit him with a body
harness. He even followed me in to the dog shower with no hesitation. The bath itself was a little scary (he leapt into my arms), but he loved being dried off.
In the house, Bertie did well. He enjoyed chewing his nylabone or stuffed squirrel, was quiet when he had to wait alone, made good progress on crate training, and was very friendly interacting with my dog through the baby gate. Much as he loves affection, he was also able to settle and lie down nearby while I read.
Bertie seems to have come a long way from that first photo at the shelter. I think he will continue to blossom with people who can appreciate him, and offer
him the love, joy, security, and guidance he deserves.

Bertie lives in Kennel 3.

GROVER, a young Shepherd mix, came to the shelter a couple of months ago, most likely after having been hit by a car. When he first arrived, he wasn't even able to stand up, but his tail wagged and wagged :-)
Though X-rays confirmed Grover had extensive pelvic injuries and must have been in considerable pain, his cheerful nature shone through and won over everyone he met. A visit to an orthopedic specialist gave us the good news that Grover's fractures were healing so well that surgery would not be indicated, and so he went into foster care to continue his convalescence.
Grover settled into his foster home as if he had always lived there. He quickly became completely housetrained, and was content to spend time quietly in his crate during the work day (with a break at lunchtime). In the evenings and at the weekends, he was equally happy to join his foster family for a gentle stroll, or some TV-watching.
Grover's recent follow-up X-rays show that his healing process has gone so well that we can now make him available for adoption! He'll need limited leash walks for a few more weeks but after that, apart from continuing to avoid slippery surfaces, he should be able to lead a normal life :-)
Grover is now back at the shelter, and ready to meet his adoptive family - he's an APS GOLD STAR DOG!

Grover lives in Kennel 27.

JODIE is a cute, 2-3 year old Corgi mix who's social and a little sensitive. She can be a little worried about handling, but will blossom with gentle petting and socialization. Some obedience training will also help her confidence.
Jodie needs a gentle, low-stress home with older children only.
A note about Jodie from one of our volunteers:
I just wanted to let you and potential adopters know what a good girl Jodie is. I understand that she was a bit worried when she first arrived but she sure seems to have adjusted. She learned "sit" and the routines of the shelter very quickly. She's very smart and attentive to humans. She's wonderful on the leash and periodically looks over to make sure I'm there and that she's doing everything right. She's really one of the easiest and sweetest dogs I've ever met!

ADOPTION PENDING THROUGH INDEPENDENT ANIMAL RESCUE

HARVEY is a handsome, 9-10 month old Lab/Pit mix who's an affectionate, social boy with a very endearing Boxer-type wiggle :-)
He loves to chase a ball, and likes to play with his toys. He enjoys playing with other dogs, though he would need to have a playmate that appreciated his somewhat boisterous playstyle! He's very attentive and responsive, and should be great fun to train (he already knows "sit").
Harvey will be a wonderful companion for an active single person or couple who would give him good exercise and commit to continued obedience training.
Here's more about Harvey from one of our volunteers who knows and loves him:
Harvey is a healthy, happy, enthusiastic young dog with a positive attitude! He has short, shiny black fur with a white nose and mittens. He's friendly with other dogs.
Harvey loves life! He enjoys taking walks and is very good in his harness. He's fascinated with the bulldozers and construction work going on next door to the shelter. Playing "fetch" is a special treat, and he'll bring back the toy, "sit" and exchange it for a treat. He's very attentive and would shine in obedience class. He's also solidly housetrained.
Harvey has a soft, gentle side. He loves to jump up on the bench by the trail and sit next to you for a snuggle.

And more from another volunteer:
Harvey is quite a goofball! He loves to make you laugh when you play ball with him - I can't tell if he misses the tennis ball on purpose or if he just couldn't get it, but it bounced off his nose, and he did it again :-)

ADOPTED 05/10/08

SALLY is a young Chow/Collie mix who's about 1 year old. She has really blossomed in her time at the shelter, and has become a social, playful, outgoing girl :-)
She loves to play with other dogs, especially Roland (kennel 4). She already knows "sit", and since she loves food treats, she should be quick to learn more.
Sally needs a active, committed family to call her own.
Sally had a wonderful day trip to the home of a volunteer - here's her report:
She may not look it, but Sally is quite refined!
She was excellent on leash, even using just her flat collar. At home, she followed nicely on off-leash walks around the yard. She does a nice "sit." She
greeted a visitor politely then lay down between us while we talked. Sally had perfect house manners (all toileting done outside, chewed only on what was hers, was patient and quiet when she had to wait alone). And she took treats (even hot dogs) from my hand ever so gently. Good dog!
Sally has an endearing playfulness. She enjoyed the squeaky stuffed animals -- running, tossing them in the air, shaking them, rolling in the grass. She
played right close to me, and was happy to let me share and help by giving the toy a few extra squeaks.
She is also a bit sensitive and hesitant about trying new things, but using food treats and the leash really helped her. She was timid about coming in the house, but followed me and my trail of hot dogs, then was fine about coming in and out.
When it was time for a bath, I put her leash on, and she followed me into the dog shower with no hesitation. She was afraid to get into the car, but rode very well once she was there. She seemed to be anxious when she didn't know what was expected of her, but with gentle, clear leading, she was settled and cooperative.
Sally also seemed to enjoy having my dog around. They interacted well through the baby gate, and Sally seemed to have good dog-social skills. I have the
feeling she might enjoy having a dog companion in her forever home.
The last thing Sally did before we had to go back to the shelter was chase a butterfly, then come over to ask for some petting. To me that said it all -- she's
so ready to be a joyful loving companion.

IRIS is a bright, perky, 1 - 1 1/2 year old Schipperke mix who's smart, attentive and very trainable. She already does a very nice "sit" and is SO eager to learn more. She's excellent with other dogs, and would be a great dog park dog &/or 2nd dog. She would love to have a "job" to do eg. agility, Frisbee, or Flyball.
Iris needs a committed home with people who're willing to give her good exercise and training.
WANTED: Young adult female, very smart and ambitious. Serious responses only. Must be extremely energetic, dedicated, loyal and eager to work hard for her pay. Her only compensation requirements would be lots of love, attention, direction and exercise from a dedicated human.
If this ad caught your eye, Iris is your girl. She is alert, quick and energetic. She is truly a "Little Skipper" (that's where she got her breed name), alerting her humans to danger. You might find her reserved with strangers, but that is because she is very protective of her family. She has a strong herding and watching instinct. She is a high-energy dog with an intense curiosity about everything. She would require lots of attention, training and mental stimulation, and in return, she would be a faithful companion.
Did I mention that she is beautiful? She has the thick, silky coat of her breed, and beautiful markings from her "mix" contributor.

Herald Sun Pet of the Week 4/19/08
CARMEN
is an active, friendly, Husky mix who loves to play! She's a little under a year old, and already full-grown at about 40lbs. She loves her toys, and would enjoy having an easy-going male dog as a companion.
Carmen will do well with an energetic person who likes to hike or jog.
More about Carmen from one of our dog volunteers:
Carmen went to an adoption event at Patterson Place with me Sunday. She did not love the ride in the car, but she LOVED all the attention she got from humans and other dogs. Her striking beauty captivated all the humans, and her sweet nature captivated her canine pals.
Carmen is a very young adult, so she is still a little rambunctious. She will quickly develop into a wonderfully mellow friend. She is very smart, loves treats and is a good candidate for training. This is a working girl. She is very good at chasing balls and playing fetch. When we walk on the trail, she picks up pine cones, tosses them into the air and catches them. She is very curious and innovative in her quest for fun.
What a wonderful girl for an active adult or family! Please come to the shelter and check out our adorable Carmen :-)
